The former top municipal government official in Waycross and Pierce County is the lone finalist for a similar position in Americus, Ga.
Rafel Maddox, who served as City Manager in Waycross and most recently as Pierce County Manager, is expected to be named this week the new City Manager in the Sumter County city.
The City Council of Americus announced earlier this month Maddox was determined the only qualified candidate for the position of City Manager. The Mayor and Council will select the City Manager at a 6 p.m. meeting Friday, March 20.
“I’m very thankful for this opportunity to work with the Mayor and City Council to build upon the foundation already established in the amazing city of Americus,” Maddox told the Americus Times Recorder after he was selected as the lone finalist. “... Making sure the Americus vision becomes reality is our priority.”
Maddox, a native of Waycross, served as Pierce County Manager from October, 2023 until announcing his resignation last December 1 effective January 1, 2026. At that time he said he was leaving for an opportunity too good to pass up.
Maddox served as Waycross City Manager until being dismissed by the Waycross City Commission August 7, 2018 for “inappropriate conduct in the workplace.”
The firing followed his suspension with pay and the city’s near month-long internal investigation by the city of a harassment complaint by Peggy Grady, manager of the city’s Main Street program and a Maddox hire.
He began his tenure as City Manager in Waycross in 2014. Maddox served as the city’s Community Improvement and Human Resources Director from 2008 until being named to the top administrative post.
After his leaving Waycross, Maddox was City Administrator in Fort Valley and City Manager in Quitman.
