Southern Forest World (SFW) will host a ribbon- cutting ceremony at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 24, to celebrate the opening of the remodeled Brasstown Bald Tower.
After the ceremony, the tower will be open for observation tours. Additionally, for a fee, visitors will be able to climb to the top of the facility and observe the SFW grounds.
The historic fire tower was originally built on Brasstown Bald in 1947, before being replaced in 1965. It was subsequently moved to Southern Forest World in 1980 by the Georgia Forestry Commission.
As the highest mountain in Georgia, Brasstown Bald and its fire towers have played an important role in the state’s history of fire prevention in the southeast region of the United States.

“The connection between Southern Forest World and Brasstown Bald Fire Tower is primarily historical and educational,” said Southern Forest World treasurer Denise Lee. “The fire tower served as a crucial fire lookout for the area, and the museum at Southern Forest World houses exhibits that highlight the history of forestry and the impact of fire on the environment.
“The fire tower’s role in fire protection and the museum’s focus on the forestry industry make it a significant part of the educational experience at Southern Forest World.”
In addition to the ribbon cutting, SFW also will be holding its membership appreciation barbecue luncheon, along with a membership drive, free of charge.
