Bears take third at Granger Invitational

Pierce County’s Bears placed third Saturday at the Granger Invitational tennis tournament in La-Grange, knocking off Class 5A Lakeside-Evans in the consolation match.

PCHS opened the week blanking Region 3-AA foe Savannah Arts Academy 50 Tuesday March 10 on the road.

The Bears opened tournament play Friday, March 13 in LaGrange beating Class 6A Etowah 3-1. Class 6A Lowndes handed PCHS a 3-2 setback in the second match. Pierce County clipped the Panthers 3-2 in Saturday’s third-place match.

Pierce County was scheduled to play at Appling County Tuesday, March 17 in a region matchup. The Bears will participate in the two-day Wildcat Invitational at Camden County High School Friday, March 20 and Saturday, March 21.

SAVANNAH — The Bears swept the five matches in straight sets against Savannah Arts.

J.C. Nimmer eased past Aiden Lee at No. 1 singles, winning 6-1, 6-4. Jeb Bradley notched a 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 2 over Justin Lee. Aaden Carlson knocked off Evan Senger 6-2, 6-0 at No. 3.

Both PCHS doubles teams recorded 6-1, 6-0 victories. The No. 1 duo of Kellen Roberts and Grayson Rodgers downed the team Finn Hollingsworth and Rohan Vasan, while the No. 2 team of Colby Coates and Thomas Lucas turned back Picro Curpio Del Curpio and Pearson Young.

LAGRANGE — Pierce County won twice in singles action and split the doubles competition with one match pulled because of a time limit.

Nimmer doubled up Jacob Champ at No. 1 singles, winning 6-3, 6-3. Bradley posted a 6-3, 6-2 victory at No. 2 over Jack Myers. Carlson led at No. 3 against Bennett Lawless 75 when the match was pulled.

The No. 1 doubles team of Roberts and Rogers lost to Colby Kuleszynski and Eric McVay 6-0, 6-7, 10-7. the No. 2 tandem of Christian Thorne and Colby Coates notched a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Arturo Rosario and Nick Pieroamian.

LAGRANGE — Lowndes used a sweep of the doubles matches to beat the Bears after dropping two of the three singles matches.

Nimmer was blanked 60, 6-0 by Holden Walton at No. 1 singles. Bradley overpowered Ben Cochran at No. 2 winning 6-0, 6-1. Carlson needed a 10-point, third set tie-breaker to knock off Brandon Ott 6-0, 0-6, 10-2.

Roberts and Rodgers lost a third set tie-breaker to Eli Johnson and Jacob Howard at No. 1 doubles, falling 6-2, 26, 10-7. Coates and Thorne fell 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2 to Shir Kapoer and Ethan Stoutamire.

LAGRANGE — PCHS used a sweep of the doubles matches to beat Lakeside-Evans in the third-place match.

Coates and Kellen Roberts teamed up at No. 1 doubles to beat Gray Hollan and Jayden Kwon 6-1, 7-5 with the No. 2 tandem of Rogers and Thorne notching a 61, 6-4 victory over Aarnsh Gupton and Jaydon Kwon.

Bradley posted the lone singles victory, winning 7-6, 6-2 at No. 2 over Quinn McWhorter. Nimmer fell 6-3, 1-6 at No. 1 to Tucker Preston. Carlson suffered a 7-5, 6-3 setback at No. 3 to James Sun.
