Puryear fires 68 to win tourney

WAYNESBORO — Bennett Puryear’s carded a career-best round of four-underpar 68 to win the Burke County TaylorMade/Adidas Invitational here at the Waynesboro Country Club Saturday.

Puryear, who recorded six birdies in his round of 35-33-68, was one of four golfers to post red figures in the March 14 event. He clipped Grovetown’s Carson Keck’s round of 69. The Aquinas duo of Andrew Cochran and Grady Kelly each posted two-under-par scores of 70.

The Class A Private School Irish added a 72 and 77 to shot a oneover- par team score of 289 to win the 13-team event. Class 3A West Laurens finished second (72-72-7376), five shots behind with a 293. PCHS was third with a 302.

Rounding out the field were Class 5A Coffee (307), Class 6A Grovetown (309), Class 2A Thomson (321), Class 2A host Burke County (327), GIAA Westminster-Augusta (331), Class 5A Effingham County (335), Class 5A Greenbrier (338), GIAA Edmund Burke (341), Class A DI Toombs County (346) and Class 5A Evans (366).

Hardt Strickland followed Puryear, shooting 39-36-75 to tie for 12th. Strickland recorded five birdies in his round.

Griffin Hull shot 37-41-78 to finish in a four-way tie for 19th. His round included four birdies.

Barrett Moore rounded out the team score, carding a 40-41-81 score to finish in the a four-way tie for 29th.

Justin Smith was a shot after a round of 40-42-82 to finish in a three-way tie for 33.

Beau Strickland (42-41-83) and C.J. Weathersby (41-42-83) finished in a four-way tie for 36th.

PCHS played in the Monday, March 16 17-team Viking Classic at Kinderlou Forest Club hosted by Lowndes.
