Three members of the Brantley County community passed away Friday and Saturday.
Forrest Thomas, longtime coach and educator, passed away Friday, March 6. He was 91.
Coach Thomas began his coaching and teaching career at Nahunta High School, and after consolidation, continued to teach and coach at Brantley County High School until his retirement in 1987.
He coached baseball, girl’ and boys’ basketball and track, and was an assistant football coach throughout his career. He led the Nahunta High girls to Class B state runnersup finishes in 1963 and 1964.
In addition to his education and coaching career, Thomas was a veteran of the U.S. Army, a member of the Hayner Hunting Club and a founding member of Southside Baptist Church of Nahunta.
He was an avid sports fan and enjoyed hunting, fishing, woodworking and spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, March 10, from Southside Baptist Church.
Linton Herrin, former Brantley County Commissioner, passed away Friday, March 6. He was 87.
Herrin served as county commissioner for one term, being elected in 2006 and serving through 2011.
He was retired after over 38 years of service with Georgia Pacific Pulp and Paper in Brunswick.
Herrin was a member of Sons of Confederacy and managed maintenance for Rob Lewis Cemetery for many years. A devoted family man, he also loved farming, fishing, making cane syrup, listening to country music, watching Georgia Bulldog football and riding the countryside.
Funeral services were held Monday, March 9, from the Southside Baptist Church.
Allyson Johns, former member of the Brantley County Board of Elections, passed away Saturday, March 7. She was 76.
Johns served on the Board of Elections in the 1990s and was also a past secretary at Hickox Baptist Church.
She was also a homemaker and devoted mother to her sons and Nana to her grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., today (Wednesday, March 11) from the Hickox Baptist Church.
