Nahunta council approves proclamation

NAHUNTA — The Nahunta City Council made a public proclamation for Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities during its monthly March meeting.

IDD Month, or National Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Month, is recognized during the month of March to acknowledge individuals with developmental disabilities in order to increase awareness and encourage active participation from others.

It is an acknowledgement to help these individuals live vibrant lives and receive full support from their communities so they can have full access to education and employment.

Mayor Mary Lee advocated the city to come together to give these individuals the support and resources they deserve during the Monday, March 2 meeting.

“Our communities are stronger whenever everyone participates,” Mayor Lee said.

Council members unanimously approved a resolution, on a motion by Councilman Andrew Altman and second by Councilman Bruce Davis, for the LAP (Language Access Plan) for the 2025 CDBG (Community Development Block Grant) program. The plan is to help provide someone who does not speak English to have an interpreter provided for them.

The council unanimously approved a variance, on a motion by Councilwoman Crystal Johns and seconded by Councilman Altman, for Gary Johns on Knox Street. Johns, who owns an acre with a house, was requesting to have another home built on the same property. Johns has already applied for the variance.

Council members approved the End of School Year Bash, on a motion by Councilwoman Johns and seconded by Councilwoman Deloise Anderson, scheduled for Saturday, May 16 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at City Hall.

Police Chief Brad Todd gave the monthly report for February 2026. There were 563 E911 calls, 292 traffic stops, 82 citations, 210 warnings, 19 incident reports filed, four accident reports filed, and five arrests made.

Chief Todd also gave credit to his officers for helping with the Charlton County fire fire two weeks ago along Hwy. 301 in Homeland. He commended them for their response and their help was tremendous.

City manager Tom Wirth gave the public works reports with the absence of Jeremy Ryan. Wirth said the FY25 audit is complete, and all reports were sent to the State and have been approved.

The 2025 CDBG is in its early stage of design. In addition, the Brooker Street lift station is under a total renovation and it is part of the USDA grant.

For the City Clerk/Mayor Report, Mayor Lee requested to change the time of the City Council meetings from 7 p.m. to 6 p.m. beginning next month. This request was unanimously approved by the council after a motion by Councilman Altman and a second by Councilwoman Johns.

Following a discussion of giving City Manager Wirth the authority to approve or disapprove all variances, Councilwoman Johns made a motion giving Wirth the authority to approve or disapprove all variances. Councilwoman Anderson seconded the motion, which passed unanimously.

The next Nahunta City Council meeting will be on Monday, April 6 at 6 p.m. at Nahunta City Hall.
