County seats being contested

Only two of the six seats available in the Ware County in the Primary Election in May will be contested after the close of qualifying last week.

Jonathan Daniell and Raylan Guy filed to challenge incumbent Timothy Lucas for the District 3 seat on the Ware County Commission. The only other challenge came from Dee Meadows for the Ware County Board of Education’s District 6 seat currently held by Brandi Waters, who earned the seat four years ago by defeating incumbent Meadows.

Incumbents for three of the other four posts qualified, but will be unopposed May 19. They were District 1 Commissioner Leonard Burse and board of education members Rusty Ganas in District 4 and Wendell Bagwell in District 5.

Bradley Collins was the lone candidate filing for Solicitor General. Joseph R. Johnson, Jr. currently holds the post, but did not file qualifying papers for another term by the noon deadline, Friday, March 6.

Qualifying began Monday, March 2 at the Ware County Board of Elections and Registration for nonpartisan and Democratic Party candidates while Republican Party candidates qualified at the Ware County Courthouse.

Early voting for the election begins Monday, April 27 at the elections office and continues through Friday, May 15. Weekday hours are 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. with the Saturday, May 2 and 9 opportunities held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Voting Election Day will be from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at county locations. If a runoff is needed for any of the seats, it will be Tuesday, June 16.

Residents must be registered to vote by April 20 in order to be eligible to cast a ballot in the primary.
