The annual Dr. Mamie L. Kennedy Black History Oratorical program, sponsored by Delta Zeta chapter of Phi Delta Kappa educational sorority, was held last month at the Upper Room on Ossie Davis Parkway.
Students in elementary, middle, and high school participated in the event, delivering speeches from the topic in their respective category.
Topics were: Courage Looks Like Kindness (elementary); What It Means to Be Chosen (middle school); and Answering the Call to Lead (high school).
Winners were Kingsley Rivers-Wesley in elementary, Jordan Steele in middle school, and high schooler Jasmine Golden.
Other top finishers in each division were:
• Elementary — 2. Paisley Hadden, 3. Zamariah Walker, and 4. Amiya Stephens-Lewis;
• Middle School — 2. Zaiden Barrett, 3. Caden Dotson, and 4. Gabriel Harvey;
• High School — 2. Terence Harvey II.
Judges for the competition were James Brown, Jr., Danielle Brown, and Michele Shaw Brown.
The program also featured praise dancers and an inspirational message from Dr. Renae Sellers.
