Long-time educator and community leader Mattie Daniels died last Thursday, March 5. She was 87.
Daniels was a career educator teaching for 30 years in Blackshear and in Kingsland. She began her career as a teacher at her alma mater, Lee Street High School and after interg ration began teaching elementary school science classes.
She believed in hands on learning, including conducting rocket launches, hosting science fairs and creative experiments.
Daniels was very active as a civic and community leader serving as a poll worker for elections and serving on the Pierce County Library Board.
She was also a devoted member of Scott Chapel United Methodist Church in Blackshear, where she served on the annual homecoming committee.
She was an outstanding basketball player for Lee Street High School and was inducted into the Pierce County Sports Hall of Fame in 2022. She was also a master gardener and loved growing flowers.
A wake will be held from 4-7 p.m. Friday, March 13, from the Scott Chapel United Methodist Church, 420 Highway Avenue, Blackshear.
Homegoing services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 14, from the Scott Chapel United Methodist Church.
