Youthful PCHS Lady Bear linksters begin quest for fifth consecutive state title

JEKYLL ISLAND — Pierce County Lady Bears Mollie and Brooke Dixon teamed up to tie for fifth place here Saturday in the annual Red Ryder Cup two-person scramble at the Jekyll Island Golf Resort.

“It was fun and rewarding to watch the girls work together and feed off of each other’s energy,” said head coach Stuart Stipe. “It was a long and hot day and they all faced adversity, but with their partner they learned how to compete and battle till the end. Mollie Kate and Brooke were able to share a special memory playing together and finished tied for fifth.”

The Dixons, one of three PCHS teams in the 65-team March 7 field, posted a twounder- par round of 70 to three teams from Lowndes, Lakeside-Evans and North Oconee.

Nine teams posted red numbers led by Richmond Hill’s seven-under-par score of 65. Camden County finished two shots off the pace with a 67. Coffee and Madison County posted scores of 68.

Tallulah Falls was ninth with a 71. Five teams tied for 10th with even par scores of 72. The list included Blessed Trinity, North Oconee III, Hart County, White County and White County II.

The Dixons put together a round of 3535-70. The Belle Sinclair-Kadence Hale duo shot 38-36 to finish in a six-way tie for 18th. The other five schools were Richmond Hill II, Metter III, Centennial, Seckinger and Madison County II.

Grayson Harris and Rhyan Tompkins posted 42-40-82 to finish in a three-way tie for 39th with Camden County II and South Effingham.

“Today was a good day for our golf team,” said head coach Stuart Stipe. “We had six Lady Bears get some valuable tournament experience. Events such as this will prove beneficial when we get to the Area and State Tournaments.

“I’m not really a fan of the scrambles, but it is tradition and the perfect way to welcome the new golf season and introduce the young players to high school golf. Moving forward, everything will be individual stroke play.”

The Lady Bears headed back to the Brunswick area Tuesday, March 10, to face Frederica Academy at the Ocean Forest Golf Course on St. Simons Island. They travel to Columbus for a Saturday, March 14, tournament at Maple Ridge Golf Course.
