Pierce County’s next Transportation Investment Act (TIA) Project will include $8.6 million in improvements to Hacklebarney, Old River, Tyre Bridge, Sunset and Trudie Roads.
Commissioners approved a resolution to contract with the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) for the improvements at their regular meeting last Tuesday night. County Chairman Neal Bennett explained 100 percent of the funding for the projects will come from TIA funds.
The Southern Georgia Region, including Pierce and 17 other counties in the area, approved a 10-year one percent sales tax to fund regional and local transportation improvements. The Southern Georgia Region originally passed the sales tax in 2018. The sales tax maxed out its collections about two years early and voters renewed the tax in a referendum in May, 2024.
The local TIA projects include resurfacing and drainage improvements for Hacklebarney Road ($2,643,000), Trudie Road ($2,191,000) Tyre Bridge Road ($1,823,000), Sunset Road ($1,135,000) and Old River Road ($806,000).
County officials told The Times after the meeting plans are to begin planning for the road improvements by the end of this year. Estimated completion date of all projects would be 2031.
The latest TIA project was the three-phase County Farm Road, U.S. Highway 84/Knox Road/New School Road project completed last month.
