Moore to challenge Lowman for fourth district commissioner seat

Austin Moore will challenged incumbent fourth district commissioner David Lowman in the May 19 Republican primary.

Moore is a life-long resident of Pierce County.

“I look forward to having the opportunity to represent this county`s largest rural district and its residents,” Moore said.

Moore is a resident of the Walkerville Community and serves as a member of the Walkerville Volunteer Fire Department alongside his father, brother, uncle, cousins and numerous neighbors. His wife and family attends Walkerville Baptist Church and he is employed with Superior Plus Propane/ Brantley Gas in Blackshear.

“If you know me, you also know I am a very loud and proud Pierce County Bear fan. I believe it is obvious my roots run deep throughout this community,” he said. “There is nothing that brings me more honor than to be a Pierce County Bear and the son of a farmer.”

Moore stressed the importance of community pride and strategic growth as his reasons for running for the seat.

“There is nothing that brings me more honor than to be the son of a farming family. The importance of our land and community brings me the greatest pride. A pride I want all residents of our district to possess and pass down to our children and grandchildren. With unity and wise decision making, I promise to be part of the legacy we leave to those who come after us. The desires to see our community strategically grow while maintaining its pleasant charm is something that will take precision, guidance and foresight.”

The Moores are expecting their first child in July, and he says they have prayed on how to give back to a community that has loved and supported them so much.

“She and I could think of no greater honor than to serve as a representative of the community of people we live among,” he said. “I am proud to be a member of the greatest community in all of southeast Georgia, and I would be honored to represent our district.”

Incumbent Lowman says he has been a “hands on” commissioner and says the county is in the best position it has been in since he’s been a commissioner.

“I’m proud of what we’ve accomplished, especially with our fire department, road department and EMS,” he said.

Lowman recalls when he was first elected he sometimes pitched in to help at the road department because they were shorthanded.

“We now have a full staff and have upgraded our equipment,” he

says.

He says improvements to the fire departments with apparatus and gear and resuming local control of the EMS are two other accomplishments he is proud of.

“There’s more to do. I want to be able to see some things through including some road projects, especially Tyre Bridge Road, and the new recreation complex.

Lowman is retired from the Bureau of Prisons and is currently completing his second term on the commission.

He and his wife, Alta, have a son, Jake, and a daughter, Kalee Howell (husband Brian). They also have three grandchildren and are active at Remnant Church. He has also served as fire chief of the Northside Fire Station during both terms and has been on the board of directors for Georgia’s Own Credit Union for seven years.

The fourth district is the largest district by land area and encompasses most of the northern section of the county including Mershon, Bristol, Patterson and Offerman.
