The Okefenokee Heritage Center Black Heritage Committee recently held a reception to honor the artists who participated in the annual Black Heritage Committee Art Exhibit.
During the reception February 22, Art Gallery Director Bob Brown introduced a video tribute to the late Willie Rogers Character, a talented musician, music teacher and composer.
The video was underscored by an original composition by Character, who’s also remembered as a historian and lecturer on African American history from the 1830s through the end of the 1900s.
The Heritage Center also renamed its multi-use space in honor of Character. A banner was revealed during the reception, designating the area The Venue.
A plaque commemorating the many contributions to the community made by Character, who died February 20, 2022, was presented to his family. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Dorothy, and sons Justin, James, Jarod, and Jason.
