DANIELSVILLE — Madison County’s Laila Streetman and Addy Grace Smith combined to outscore Ware County here Tuesday night in the opening round of the Class 4A state tournament, leading the Lady Red Raiders to a 48-29 victory.

The Region 3 third-seed Lady Gators (10-15) were making their 16th state playoff appearance since consolidation (1994--95) and eighth in nine seasons, with only the 2020 COVID cancelled tournament interrupting. Ware County dropped to 0-5 in true state tournament road games with the loss to Region 8 runner-up Madison County.

Streetman (trey) finished with a game-high 17 points, with Smith (trey) adding 13 points.

Madison County jumped out to a double-digit lead in the opening eight minutes. The margin was 24 points heading into the final period.

The Lady Red Raiders made five more two-point shots (12-7) and doubled up Ware County behind the arc (6-3). The two teams combined to go 7-for-15 (Madison County 4-for-8, Lady Gators 3-for-7) at the free throw line.

Bailey Denton (trey) was on the lone Ware County player to reach double-figures, finishing with 11 points.

Madison County raced out to a 19-8 lead by the end of the opening stanza, with Streetman and Smith combining for 11 first quarter points. The Lady Gators suffered through a cold spell in the second stanza, getting outscored 13-2 to trail 32-10 at intermission.

The Lady Raiders padded their margin by two points during the third period, outpointing Ware County 9-7 to take a commanding 41-17 advantage to the final stanza. The Lady Gators whittled five points off the deficit over the last eight minutes, outscoring Madison County 12-7.

Lydia Munford netted six points with two treys. A’Treasure White and Bre Hill contributed four points apiece. Lauren Belle and Nevaeh North bagged two points each.
