WCHS drops home tilt to Brunswick falling 10-8

Brunswick collected 15 hits and scored in all but two innings on the way to a 10-8 victory against Ware County, in the first game of a home-and-home series here Tuesday.

The Red Terrors (7-2) had a four-run second, and plated two runs in each of the third and fifth innings, to snap a two-game losing streak with the non-region win February 24.

Ware County (2-6) entered the game on a twogame winning streak. The Gators also had a four-run inning, but hurt their cause with four errors.

Brett Hickson, Coleman Smith, and Cole Howes keyed the Brunswick offense with nine hits and five runs batted in between them. Hickson was 4-for-5, including a double with two knocked in, while Smith had three singles in four at-bats.

Howes was 2-for-4 with a triple and three RBI. Luke Park also had two hits in four trips to the plate.

Hickson earned the win as the last of three Brunswick pitchers. He tossed 3.2 innings, allowing three hits and a run with four walks and three strikeouts.

Ryden Kinnon, the last of three hurlers for the Gators took the loss. He was touched for eight hits and three runs, with a walk and two strikeouts over the final four innings.

Landon Smallwood pitched the first inning for the Gators and gave up a run on a hit with a pair of walks. Tanner Lairsey followed him with two innings in which he gave up six runs on six hits, with three walks and a strikeout.

Slade Sweat was the lone Gator with a multiplehit game, going 2-for-5 with a double and a run scored. Colt Cox, Keaton Holloway and Smallwood each had a double and a run batted in.

Garrison Joyner also had a single and a RBI, while Walker Hudson had a single. Seth Suess and Blake Gunter each knocked in runs.

Sweat and Gunter each stole two bases, while Collin Crawford added one.

After the visitors scored in its half of the first, the Gators responded to tie it on four walks. Crawford led off with the first one, while Gunter had the fourth after two were out to plate him.

The Red Terrors took a lead they wouldn’t lose with the big second inning and two more runs in the third for a 7-1 cushion. Ware bounced back with four in its half of the third to close the gap.

Smallwood opened the inning with a walk before Gunter struck out. Holloway then walked, before Cox doubled to score Smallwood, move Holloway to third and send Brunswick starter Braxton Johnson to the bench.

Joyner greeted reliever Jake Brooker with a single to score Holloway and move Cox to third. Crawford then walked to load the bases for Suess, who brought home Cox with a fly ball that also moved up Joyner and Crawford.

Joyner scored on a passed ball on the first pitch to Hudson, but Brooker escaped further trouble by getting Hudson to ground out.

The Gators drew even with a two-run fourth. Sweat led off with a double, and after Smallwood flew out, Brooker hit Gunter.

Sweat and Gunter then pulled off two straight double steals, with Sweat scoring on the second and Gunter moving to third. Holloway followed with a double to score Gunter and chase Brooker.

Hickson halted the threat by picking off Holloway at second and fanning Cox.

Brunswick broke the tie with two runs in the fifth on four straight hits to start the frame. After both teams were scoreless in the sixth, the Terrors pushed the lead to 10-7, with a run in the seventh on a basesloaded walk.

Ware got a run in its half of the seventh before suffering the final out on the base paths.

After Crawford grounded out leading off, Suess walked and Hudson singled. Sweat struck out, but Smallwood then doubled to left field, scoring Suess.

However, Hudson was thrown out at third by left fielder Grant Moore to end the game.
