Pirates finish off two-game sweep of Ware

Pirates finish off two-game sweep of Ware
CORRECTION: Ware County Lady Gator Nevaeh Norton was misrepresented in a photo in last week’s edition of the Waycross Journal-Herald. The picture was not Norton, who was an honorable mention player in the selection of the all-Region 1-AAAA girls’ squad. The WJH regrets the error.

BRUNSWICK — Brunswick rode a pair of three-run innings to a 73 victory here against Ware County Thursday afternoon for a sweep of their home-and-home series.

The Red Terrors’ February 26 win followed a 10-8 triumph in Waycross two days earlier.

Ware (2-7) scored a run in the top of the second for a short-lived lead, only to see the Terrors plate three in their half of the frame, and another three in the third. Brunswick (8-2) added its final run in the fourth, before the Gators closed the scoring with two in the sixth.

Trenton Robinson was the central figure for Brunswick. He was 2-for-3 with a double, home run and three runs batted in at the plate while pitching the first four innings, allowing two hits and a run, with two walks and seven strikeouts.

Wyatt Floyd held the Gators (2-7) at bay over the final three innings, giving up a pair of runs on four hits with no walks and four strikeouts.

Braxton Johnson also was 2-for-3 with a double and a pair knocked in for Brunswick. Coleman Smith had a pair of singles in two at-bats.

Slade Sweat took the loss for the Gators, allowing all the Red Terrors runs — six earned — on nine hits, with three walks and three strikeouts. Trace Crosby finished up with a spotless sixth.

Walker Hudson was the lone Gator with more than one hit, going 2-4 with a triple. Ashler Lee, Landon Smallwood, Keaton Holloway and Garrison Joyner collected singles for Ware, while Sweat and Joyner each knocked in runs.

The Gators scored their run in the second after two were out. Holloway led off with a single, stole second after a strikeout, moved to third on a ground out, and scored on a passed ball.

Consecutive doubles by Robinson and Johnson helped fuel Brunswick’s response in its half of the second. Johnson plated the first two runs, while a single by Brody Sapp scored Johnson for a 3-1 lead.

Robinson blasted his homer to account for all the runs in the third inning. Brunswick scored its final run, which came on an error, without the benefit of a hit.

In the Ware sixth, Hudson led off with a triple, and scored when Floyd was late to the plate with his throw after fielding a grounder by Sweat. Smallwood followed with a single to move Sweat to third.

Gunter brought Sweat home with a sacrifice fly to right field, before Floyd escaped any more damage with a strikeout and a groundout.

Ware threatened in the seventh as Joyner and Lee singled around a foul out to the catcher. Floyd again steadied to get another foul out, this one to first base, and a fly ball to right field.
