Blackshear Elementary School (BES) has been recognized as the top collector in last year’s regional can tab competition, thanks to the leadership of speech pathologist Shannon Bennett and the collective efforts of students, staff and families.

The BES can tab campaign benefits Ronald McDonald House Charities, which provides housing and support for families whose children are receiving medical treatment. Through consistent participation and community involvement, BES collected more tabs than any other participating school in the region.

Parents and families played a significant role in the effort, saving and sending in can tabs throughout the year. Their partnership helped make the initiative both successful and meaningful for students.

In recognition of the accomplishment, Kristy Foreman of Elliano’s visited the school to present a backpack filled with supplies and treats for students and teachers. The donation served as a token of appreciation for the school’s outstanding commitment to service.

Principal Mandy Williams praised the school community’s dedication. “Our students are learning that even small actions can make a big difference,” said Williams. “Collecting can tabs may seem simple, but it represents teamwork, service, and caring for families beyond our school walls.”

School leaders say the annual can tab campaign will continue as a way to teach students the value of service and compassion while supporting families in need.
