Valentines Day is already fading into the distance, but those in need of a little good company can still get a blind date at the Pierce County Library— that is, a blind date with a book.
A variation on their traditional book sales, the local library has added a hint of mystery to the many surplus books they sell to raise funds. Instead of knowing exactly which book or author they will be reading, those brave enough to take a blind date with a book make their selections based on a brief description written on a vintage card holder affixed to the wrapping paper. Inside the card holder they will also find a bookmark and a pouch of tea, all of which add up to the perfect way to enjoy a new book.
Descriptions of the mystery books go something like, “This novel is a modern day retelling of Cinderella set in Napa Valley. In this story of love and courage, along with overcoming evil the lovely Camille secures her ‘happily ever after’.” Another reads, “A historical fiction novel set during the American Revolution. A Quaker girl becomes the mysterious spy “355”. Explores themes of espionage and the personal cost of war.”
Pierce’s Friends of the Library group played matchmaker at the Okefenokee Heritage Center’s We Love Literacy book festival, helping sell the first few of these novelty selections. The rest have returned to the Pierce County Library, displayed near one of the two entrances, awaiting a reader to help assuage their loneliness.
“Response to the idea has been very positive. I think people enjoy the surprise of going into a new book blind,” says Branch Manager Kaitlyn Vernon. “So why not help support the library by taking yourself out on a fun, literary date!”
It costs just $5 to set up yourself or someone else on a blind date with a book. The library currently has over a dozen wrapped and ready to go. For more information, please contact the Pierce County Library at 912449-7040.
