Construction could begin soon on a new Zaxby’s and a new Waffle House in Blackshear.
The Times has learned building permits have been issued for both the new Zaxby’s and the new Waffle House restaurants.
Tentative plans call for construction to begin on both restaurants within the next two months.
The Zaxby’s is slated to be built on U.S. Highway 84 just west of Blackshear.
The Waffle House is planned for U.S. Highway 84 adjacent to McDonald’s near the courthouse intersection with Georgia Highway 15/121 (Main and Gordon Streets).
Taylor Hawkins, franchise owner for the new Zaxby’s, confirmed the developments.
“We hope to begin construction of the restaurant by the end of February or first of March,” he said.
Efforts to reach media relations for Waffle House were not successful prior to press time. When contacted last fall, Waffle House representatives would not confirm or deny plans for a restaurant in Blackshear.
Plans for the new Zaxby’s restaurant were announced in January of last year, but reports indicate a delay in permitting the proposed new restaurant’s septic system is the reason ground hasn’t been broken yet.
Local attorney and retired state court judge Franklin Rozier Jr. and his brother, Mike, told The Times in October they sold a tract of property on U.S. Highway 84 to a development company for a Waffle House restaurant.
Zaxby’s is an Athensbased restaurant specializing in chicken fingers, wings and sandwiches, while Waffle House, based in Norcross, is a national 24-hour restaurant chain known for its breakfast menu.
