Jesse Jackson remembered

Jesse Jackson remembered

Editor, The Times: I want to thank the community for their support of Black History Month and to stop and reflect on some leaders who have made a positive impact on the lives of African Americans in our nation.

The death this week of the Rev. Jesse Jackson led to many memories of his efforts to improve our nation.

The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. led the push for civil rights in the 1950s and 1960s and helped our nation to respect the freedom and rights of all people regardless of the color of our skin.

From his leadership in the civil rights movement to his historic presidential runs in 1984 and 1988, the Rev. Jackson reminded us that “I am somebody” and to “Keep hope alive.”

His campaign led to the eventual candidacy and election of President Barack Obama in 2008.

We have come a long way, but there is still much to be done.

I encourage everyone to come out and support the Black History Month Program Saturday, February 28 at the Lee Street Resource Center.
