The stock market is not a shield from accountability

“Pam, you’re fired.” Those are words many Americans were hoping President Trump would utter after Attorney General Pam Bondi’s abysmal performance in front of Congress last week.

It’s easy to see why many on both sides of the aisle would be calling for Bondi’s job. In a hearing that was ostensibly about Bondi’s performance, most notably her Department of Justice’s handling of the Epstein Files, Bondi could only seem to deflect and avoid giving direct answers. Whenever a Democrat would ask a question about the handling of the files, Bondi’s response was almost always to point to a failure of that politician, rather than actually answer, or deflect and ask why Biden AG Merrick Garland was not held to similar scrutiny.

It’s also no surprise that plenty of Trump voters, myself among them, are upset with this. While Trump himself was more noncommittal on the issue of releasing the files, multiple members of his administration had previously been vocal about the importance of the Epstein issue.

Not only that, but the admin and broader Republican movement has made protecting children a central plank of their platform. Whether it’s from trafficking by illegal aliens and cartels, or grooming by transgender activists, “Don’t mess with kids” has become a major focus in recent years.

So when Kash Patel and Dan Bongino do a heel turn on this matter, and Trump insists we move on from this, it’s no surprise parts of his base are angry.

Perhaps the most insulting soundbite to come out of last week’s circus was when Bondi proceeded to rant about how well the stock market has done under the current administration, arguing that the focus on the Epstein files is a partisan distraction from Trump’s successes.

I’m well aware most of the Democratics grilling Bondi are only acting indignant over the Epstein issue because they see it as a political cudgel against their enemies. I agree, Pam, Garland and any AG that covered up the Epstein situation should be held to high scrutiny.

But here’s the thing, Pam. Merrick Garland is no longer the Attorney General. Garland didn’t tell the nation the Epstein client list was on his desk, before then saying there was no list. That was you, Pam.

And it is beyond insulting that you and this administration thinks “stocks are up” is an effective distraction from this issue.

One issue raised during the hearing was the redaction of billionaire mogul Leslie Wexner’s name in a document that lists him as a co-conspirator in the trafficking. It has been this administration’s position that there was no sex trafficking operation, and no need to legally pursue anyone apart from Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell. Naturally, Wexner’s mention contradicts that. When confronted by Republican Thomas Massie on this, Bondi could only use the feeble excuses that Wexner is mentioned unredacted thousands of other times in the files, that the department corrected the issue, and that Massie simply has “Trump Derangement Syndrome”.

Anyone with critical thinking skills should then ask: Why is the only time Wexner’s name redacted when he’s listed as a coconspirator? And, as Massie pointed out, the redaction was only “corrected” after it was pointed out. If nobody had made a fuss, would it have been fixed?

The answer is likely no. Following Bondi’s tail-spin, President Trump showed how far he’s come since “The Apprentice”. That Trump would have given Bondi the boot and a “You’re fired!” But in a Truth Social post, the president backed his AG, saying she was “fantastic” at the hearing, and describing the Epstein issue as “ridiculous Russia, Russia, Russia type charges.”

It appears the only scrutiny Wexner will face , as of the writing of this article, is a deposition by the US House Oversight Committee this week.

It seems the old saying holds true: the law is like a spider’s web, the small flies are caught in it, while the wasps go free.
