MORROW — Brantley County’s Peyton Perez and Ty Hughes placed fifth in their respective weight classes and the Herons finished 16th here in the Class A state Traditional tournament at The Arena at Southlake.
Social Circle captured its fourth consecutive Tradition title and ninth overall nearly doubling up the field with 212.5 points. The Redskins were followed by Toombs County (109.5), Commerce (108.5), Gordon Lee (97.5) and Trion (97) in the top five spots.
Fitzgerald (56.5) was the highest finisher from Region 1-A. BCHS was 16th with 42.5 points. Bacon County placed 22nd with 27 points. Berrien tied for 30th with 15 points. Jeff Davis was in a group who didn’t record a point.
Both Perez (165 lbs.) and Hughes (215) posted 4-2 records. Rylan Benton (120) was the only other BCHS grappler to win multiple matches going 2-2. Kelly Stringer (106), Sawyer Grimsley (132), Caden Benton (138) and Steven Cook (285) all finished 1-2 with opening round losses, a victory and a loss in the doubleelimination tournament.
• Perez started the tournament with an 8-2 victory before falling in the quarterfinals with an 18-1 technical fall loss.
He bounced back winning a 17-2 technical fall decision and by pin (5:56) before falling the consolation bracket semifinals via pin (3:19). Perez won the fifth-place match with an 8-3 decision.
• Hughes would follow the same path. After posting a 20-5 technical fall decision, he suffered a pin (1:28) loss.
Staff Report Hughes won his two next matches via pin (3:15, 5:45) before suffering a heartbreaking 2-1 decision in the consolation semifinals. He won a 21 TB-1 (Tiebreaker 1) in the fifthplace match.
A TB-1 is the first set of 30-second tiebreaker periods in overtime, used when a match is tied after regulation and a 1-minute sudden-victory period.
• Rylan Benton lost his first match by pin (2:39). He posted a 150 technical fall victory and a 18-9 major decision before losing by pin (37 seconds).
• Stringer suffered a 15-0 technical fall setback. He bounced back to win by pin (1:18) before losing by pin (5:01).
• Grimsley lost via pin (6:00), posted a 13-1 major decision and lost by pin (5:59).
• Caden Benton suffered a 6-5 loss in his first match. He followed with a pin (45 sec.) before losing 7-5.
• Cook’s three matches all ended with pins. He suffered a pin (1:39) loss, won by pin (3:04) and lost via pin (37 sec.).
