Pierce County High School may soon have a new leader. Current PCHS Principal Kelly Murray has been named as the sole finalist for Superintendent of Charlton County Schools and it’s anticipated Murray will accept the offer once the state mandated waiting period ends.
The Charlton County Board of Education named Murray its sole finalist for superintendent at a called meeting Monday night Feb. 2.
By state law, the school system must wait 14 days before finalizing the hire.
The board of education accepted Murray’s resignation at their work session last Thursday, effect ive February 17.
Pierce County Schools has begun advertising for applications for principal at the school.
Three names have been mentioned as Murray’s possible successor at the high school, and one, Dr. Brandi Todd, has confirmed she will apply for the position.
Todd is currently principal at Midway Elementary School.
PCHS assistant principal Tony Gibson and Blackshear Elementary Assistant Principal Clint Hodges have also been mentioned as possible applicants.
Gibson and Hodges both declined comment.
Murray says he has mixed emotions about his new opportunity.
“I have mixed emotions about it. I am proud of what we have accomplished at Pierce County High School, but I also am excited about the opportunity to be a superintendent,” he said.
Murray came to Pierce County in 2013 after 10 years in Charlton County as a teacher and later an administrator there.
Murray lives in Pierce County and his wife, Hannah, is from here. He came to Pierce County as assistant high school principal in 2013. After six years in the assistant’s role, he was promoted to principal in 2020, when then-principal Dara Bennett was named school superintendent.
