Bears have five qualify for state finals

COMMERCE — Jay’lynn Everett will lead five Pierce County grapplers to the Class AA state Traditional finals after winning the 215-pound weight division here in the Sectional B tournament at East Jackson High School.

Also qualifying for PCHS, which placed 10th in the Saturday, February 7, 20-team event were William Shreves (130; third), Greyson Sikes (190; fifth), Gregory Sallett (120; sixth) and Cooper Davis (150; seventh).

Landon Taylor (144; 10th) and Caleb Cason (126) also wrestled for the Bears.

The top eight wrestlers in each weight classification from Sectional “A” will meet the top eight qualifiers from the Sectional “B” tournament held at Coahulla Creek Friday, February 13 and Saturday, February 14 in Morrow.

Rockmart captured the team title piling up 351 points. Host East Jackson (276) was second followed by Cook (268), Franklin County (227.5), Union County (200), Sonoraville (190), Morgan County (156), Hart County (150), Appling County (125.5) and PCHS (112.5).

• Everett (215) pinned his way to the weight division title. He opened with a pin (2:31) in his first match.

Everett recorded a quarterfinal pin (55 seconds), a semifinal pin (1:02) and a championship pin (1:01) over East Jackson’s Emer Jacinto.

• Shreves (113) went 5-1 winning his last four matches in the loser’s bracket for a thirdplace finish.

After an opening pin (4:29), Shreves lost by pin (1:54). He won consecutive matches via pin (1:42, 3:57) and recorded a 2-1 victory in the consolation semifinals. Shreves dominated the third-place match posting a 204 technical fall decision.

• Sikes (190) finished 3-2 to place fifth. He won his first two matches via pinfalls (57 sec., 5:11) before falling 5-1 in the semifinals. After losing 16-9 in the consolation semis, Sikes won the fifth-place match via pin (3:07).

• Sallett (120) went 1-3 to finish sixth in his division. He opened with a 12-7 decision before losing a 16-4 major decision, 4-1 in sudden victory and by pin (3:01) in the fifthplace match.

• Davis (150) posted a 3-2 mark in his weight class finishing seventh. He opened with a pin (4:31) before losing a heartbreaking 8-7 decision.

Davis captured his first consolation bracket mat with a pin (2:42). After losing by pin (51 sec.), he recorded a pin (58 sec.) in the seventh-place match.

• Taylor (144) finished 2-3 after opening with a pin (3:06) loss. He bounced back in the loser’s bracket with a 1210 decision, lost by pin (53 sec.), captured a 10-6 decision, and lost via pin (3:21) in the ninth-place match.

• Cason (126) lost his only two matches by pin (51 sec., 1:38).
