PCMS Lady Bears title

Pierce County Middle School’s Lady Bears captured Southeast Georgia Middle School Athletic Conference cross-country titles.

The Lady Bears, who won four of the five regular season meets, held off Long County Middle School in the October 5, six-team finals winning a second straight championship.

“The girls ran hard and made some major improvements and passed the right people at the right time,” said head coach Denise Brown.

Pierce Middle finished with 35 points while the Lady Wildcats netted 41. Appling County Middle School (81 points) was third followed by Arthur Williams Middle School (88), Bacon County Middle School (137) and Waycross Middle School (151).

Brantley County captured the boys title with the Bears finishing third.

BCMS finished with 82 points while Long County netted 84. Host PCMS (89), which captured three regular season events in five outings, was next. The Bears were followed by Arthur Williams (90), Waycross Middle (106), Ware County Middle School (135), Martha Puckett (143), Appling Middle (166) and Bacon Middle (227).

The Lady Bears had  five runners place in the top 11 positions with all seven participating finishing in the top 16 spots.

Sylvie Branch paced PCMS with a time of 14:03.32 to finish third in the field of 41 competitors behind Long Middle’s Macey Higgason’s winning time of 13:03.91.

Branch was followed by Liza Thornton (5th; 14:38.73), Avery Crew (6th; 14:39.16), Ava Doss (15:12.22) and Rilyn Ritchey (11th; 15:20.01) rounded out the team score. Blair Bennett (15th; 15:53.49) and Heidi Hodges (16th; 15:56.99) also participated.

In the boys’ event, PCMS was paced by James Alonso’s fifth-place finish in a time of 12:30.56. Appling Middle’s Alan Rameriz led the field with a time of 11:38.60.

Alonso was followed by Samuel Carillo (17th; 13:12.91), Chase Smith (18th; 13:20.51), Aiden Anderson (24th; 13:28.10) and Flemming Cochran (25th; 13:29.63) rounding out the team score. Also participating were Carson Butler (33rd; 14:02.21) and Lee Coleman (46th; 14:45.63).
