Sixth-ranked Pierce County beat Region 1-AAA foe Tattnall County and split two games over the weekend in a tournament in Hazlehurst.

PCHS (11-6 overall, 6-1 region) opened the week rolling to a 10-1 victory Thursday, September 9 over the Lady Warriors in five innings. The win clinched the season series after posting a 9-1 home win back on August 25. The final game of the series is scheduled for September 28 in Bearville.

The Lady Bears split a pair of games Saturday in Hazelhurst at the Lady Yellow Jacket tournament.

PCHS lost a 4-2 decision to Class A third-ranked ECI (14-1) in the opener pitting ranked programs, the Lady Bulldogs’ 12th consecutive win. Pierce County, which had its season-high tying four-game winning streak snapped, bounced back in its second game blanking Class 6A Statesboro (2-11) 6-0.

PCHS has three games slated for this week. The Lady Bears hosted Class AA second-ranked Jeff Davis Monday, September 13 looking for a sweep in the season series. Pierce County notched a 9-1 victory in Hazelhurst back on August 10.

Region leader Appling County, ranked fourth, visited Tuesday, September 14. The Lady Pirates handed PCHS its lone region loss with a 7-1 home victory August 24.

Pierce County wraps up the week Thursday, September 16 hosting Berrien. The two teams will square off again Thursday, October 7 in Nashville.

Pierce County broke open a close game with an eight-run fifth inning ending the game by the “mercy rule” against the Lady Warriors.

The Lady Bears broke a scoreless tie scoring twice in the fourth. Kylie Allen got the inning started drawing a leadoff walk. Madison Pickett (2-for-2) followed with a double and was lifted for courtesy runner Sarah Davis.

Rebecca Deloach (3-for-3) laced an o-2 pitch for a double scoring Allen with Davis thrown out at the plate. Rachel Cason (1-for-2) battled back from an 0-2 count to draw a 10-pitch walk ahead of Rylee Carden’s (1-for-2) run-scoring single following three consecutive two-strike foul balls.

Tattnall County scored in the bottom of the inning against Amiya Tomlinson (5 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 K, 1 BB, 2 WP) on a one-out sacrifice fly. A leadoff walk came home to roost aided by a pair of wild pitches.

The Lady Bears did all their damage in the fifth inning after two outs and nobody on base. Eight consecutive batters reached and scored before the final out was recorded.

Three consecutive bases loaded walks extended the 2-1 lead to 5-1. A three-run error followed pushed the margin to 8-1. A run-scoring single and a second error scored the final two runs.

Pierce County ended the game with a 4-6-3 twin killing.

A run-scoring groundout followed a leadoff triple in the third inning giving ECI the lead for good against the Lady Bears.

PCHS plated two runs in its first at bat on a two-out homer by Pickett (2-for-3). Natale Herrin drew a two-out walk with Pickett following two pitches later with her first homer of the season.

ECI evened the score at 2-all in the bottom of the second against Herrin (5 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 2 ER, 5 K, 0 BB, 1 HBP). A leadoff single and hit batter was followed by a run-scoring single. The trail runner scored the tying run when the ball was misplayed in the outfield.

After taking the lead in the third, the Lady Bulldogs pushed home an insurance run in the fifth. Consecutive one-out singles was followed by a sacrifice bunt with the lead runner racing home from second.

PCHS put the tying runs on base with consecutive two-out errors on balls hit by Deloach and Allen in the sixth. An infield pop ended the threat.

Cason (1-for-3) had the only other hit for the Lady Bears with a one-out single in the second.

Pierce County took control with a four-run first inning in beating the Lady Blue Devils behind the two-hitter of Kadence Godwin.

Tivona Myles (2-for-3) got the rally started with a leadoff single moving into scoring position on a wild pitch, the first of seven uncorked by Statesboro’s starting pitcher. Herrin (1-for-2) followed with a bunt single with Myles racing home for a 1-0 lead.

Herrin, who moved up on a fielder’s choice by Deloach, stole third and scored on a wild pitch with Deloach advancing to second on the same pitch. Deloach stole third ahead of a walk to Pickett putting runners on the corners.

After a theft of second by Pickett, a wild pitch plated scored Deloach with Pickett racing home from second for a 4-0 lead.

PCHS pushed home two final runs in the second. Kaylee Cravey (1-for-2) lined a leadoff single to left and raced around to third with Myles legging out a sacrifice bunt putting runners on the corners.

After Myles stole second with one out, another wild pitch plated Cravey with Myles reaching third. Myles  scored on a two-out wild pitch.

Godwin (5 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 3 K, 0 BB, 2 WP) pitched out trouble in the opening inning stranding runners at first and third following consecutive two-out errors. She retired 12 of the next 13 Lady Blue Devils before running into two-out trouble in the fifth. A two-out error and single followed before getting the final out.
