Third-ranked Pierce County completed the season sweep of Long County winning the Region 1-AAA matchup 6-3.

PCHS’s (7-3 overall, 3-0 region) first game of the week against rival Brantley County last Tuesday, September 1, was called after a two-hour wait because of inclement weather. The Lady Herons were leading 2-0 in the second inning when the game went into a lightning delay.

Thursday’s (September 3) victory over the Lady Blue Tide (4-5, 1-3) followed a 5-4, 10-inning victory by PCHS back on August 19.

Pierce County was scheduled to travel Tuesday back to Caney Bay for a restart. The Lady Bears go to fifth-ranked Tattnall County Thursday. They visit Class AA eighth-ranked Jeff Davis Monday, September 14.

Pierce County’s two-run first inning gave the Lady Bears a lead they would not relinquish.

The first-inning damage came after the first two batters were retired. Natalie Sullivan (2-for-4) lined a two-out single, stole second and third and scored on a passed ball before Kylie Allen (1-for-2) singled. Madison Pickett (1-for-3) laced the next the next offering for a run-scoring double for the 2-0 lead.

PCHS pushed across a run in the second for a 3-0 advantage, again scoring after two outs and nobody on base.  Rylee Carden (1-for-3) sliced a triple into the right-field corner and scored when the ball was bobbled.

Long County cut the deficit to 3-2 in the bottom of the inning against Natalie Herrin (7 IP, 8 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 7 K, 2 BB). The Lady Blue Tide got a leadoff single with the next two batters reaching on sacrifice bunts to load the bases.

Following the first out, a walk forced home a run. A two-out, infield hit plated the second.

The Lady Bears got one of the runs back in the top of the third on a dropped third strike. Sullivan blooped a one-out single and raced to second on an error. She reached third on a passed ball and scored on the dropped third strike.

Long County scored its final run in the bottom of the fifth cutting the deficit to 4-3. A one-out double eventually scored on a two-out error.

PCHS added two insurance runs in the seventh without the benefit of a base hit. Carden reached on a one-out error, stole second and scored on consecutive passed balls. Natalee Griffin drew a two-out walk, stole second, moved to third on a passed ball and scored on a wild pitch.
