The Pierce County Lady Bears quest for a Region 1-AAA championship hit a road block with an upset in the semifinals.

PCHS, the second seed, lost a tough 3-2 decision to rival third seed Brantley County Thursday at the Bacon Park Tennis Complex in Savannah. The Lady Bears, who opened the tourney Tuesday with a 5-0 win over Tattnall County, beat Appling County 4-1 in the consolation match.

Pierce opened the Class AAA state tournament on the road Tuesday against Region 4 runner-up Westminister (18-2). The Lady Wildcats were the state runner-ups last year to region top-seed Blessed Trinity, the seven-time defending champions.

First Round: Lady Bears 5 - Tattnall County 0

Pierce County completely dominated the first round pairing dropping a total of three games.

Four of the matches ended with 6-0, 6-0 scores. Liza Hurst was the first beating Sarah Morgan at No. 1 with Deanna Jones doing likewise against Dyanna Valez at No. 3. Meagan Wright knocked off Chelsey Odum 6-3, 6-0.

Both doubles teams had little trouble winning love and love. Serena Strickland and Haley Theis beat Janie Tripp and Brynn Durrence at No. 1 while Regan Sikes and Sadie Marfil eased past Ruby Gonzalez and Natalie Mack.

Semifinals: Brantley County 3 - Lady Bears 2

Emily Miller’s straight set victory at No. 2 singles lifted Brantley County to the upset of the Lady Bears.

The Lady Herons swept the doubles matches after dropping two singles matches setting up the deciding match. Miller escaped with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Wright to clinch the victory.

Hurst notched another 6-0, 6-0 victory beating Caitlyn Morgan at No. 1 while Jones downed Lauryn Boyd 6-1, 6-2 at No. 3.

The Lady Herons’ No. 1 doubles team of  Macie Allen and Lacy Cummings posted a 6-2, 6-4 win against Strickland and Theis. That was followed by the No. 2 tandem of Tori Blaisdell and Breanna Boyett recording a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Sikes and Marfill at No. 2.

Consolation: Lady Bears 4 - Appling County 1

A sweep of the doubles competition after winning two of the three singles matches lifted the Lady Bears past Appling County.

Strickland and Theis overpowered the Lady Pirates’ No. 1 tandem of Courtney Thornton and Lexi Hughes winning 6-0, 6-1. Sikes and Marfil posted a 6-1, 6-3 win over Hannah Bennett and Caroline Rentz.

In singles action, Hurst continued her domination with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Corissa Bass at No. 1 with Wright beating Casey Taylor 6-2, 6-4 at No. 2. The lone loss was a 6-0, 6-2 defeat of Jones by Halee Leggett.
