Pierce County’s undefeated tennis teams netted a sweep of visiting West Laurens in non-region action Thursday.
The Lady Bears (3-0) escaped with a 3-2 victory over the Lady Raiders while the Bears (3-0) notched a 4-1 win. The match was the first in nine days for Pierce County.
PCHS will host Region 1-AAA foe Tattnall County Thursday, March 3 before heading to Valdosta for the two-day Wildcat Invitational Friday, March 4 and Saturday, March 5.
A win in a third-set, 10-point tie-breaker at No. 2 doubles lifted PCHS past the Lady Raiders.
MauraKate Waters and Taylor Sikes picked up a 6-2, 2-6, 10-7 victory over Corolanne Payne and Savannah McAdams to win the match.
The Lady Bears notched wins at No. 1 and No. 2 singles. Jenna Bennett posted a 6-2, 6-4 win over Lucy Orr with Grace Christopher turning back Jaycie Bailey 7-5, 6-3.
West Laurens picked up wins at No. 3 singles and No. 1 doubles. Kendall Ragen downed Rebecca Tyre 6-3, 6-3 while Olivia Rogowski and Hannah Landrum downed Cheyenne DeJaynes and Marli Walker 7-5, 6-3.
The Bears recorded three relatively easy wins to seal the victory over West Laurens.
PCHS lost just one game between No. 1 and No. 2 singles. Matthew Rodgers blanked Vishal Pottsburg 6-0, 6-0 while Ethan Carlson notched a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Alex Dyar. The lone loss came at No. 3 singles with Trevor Stephenson falling 6-3, 7-6 (7-3) to Clayton Tapley.
The No. 1 doubles team of Hugh Saussy and Luke Bennett recorded a 7-6 (7-2), 6-1 win over Jackson Dollar and Jordan Hardmen with the No. 2 duo of Matthew Bennett and Davis Hersey turning back Anderson Cook and Coleman Phillips 6-0, 6-3.
