The Pierce County Bears tennis season came to a close with a 3-0 loss to Blessed Trinity in the first round of the Class AAA playoffs.
The third-seed Bears, who have only one senior (Rhett Peeples), were one of three Region 1 teams to fall against Region 4 in the first round.
Second-seed Appling County was beaten 3-2 by third seed Decatur while fourth-seed Islands was blanked 5-0 by Westminister. Region champion Brantley County provided the lone win with a 5-0 blanking of Washington. The Herons will host Region 5 runner-up Cedartown in a second round pairing.
“We played some great tennis against a worthy foe,” said head coach Millie Walker. “I am pleased with our finish to the season. Thanks to all the students, parents, administration and teachers for their support this season.”
PCHS lost at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, and at No. 1 doubles. The other two matches were pulled after the Titans secured the victory.
Jake Herrin fell in three sets to Nathan McDonald losing 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 at No. 1. Jacob Sauls dropped a 6-0, 6-3 decision to Ben Gomez at No. 2. Mason Bennett trailed 6-0 to Michael Gulledge at No. 3 when the match was ended.
Pierce’s No. 1 doubles team of Eric Smith and Dalton Fernandez lost a heartbreaking 7-5, 7-6 deicision to Joe Karle and Alex Nix. The No. 2 team of Caleb Williams and Allen McIntosh led 7-6, 5-5 in their matchup with L. Cella and T. Damen when the match was called.
“We have every one returning except Rhett and that is awesome,” said Walker.
