Pierce County’s Jaden Lyons shared a fifth-place finish here Friday at the Class 3A Traditional state finals at the Macon Centreplex.
The 220-pound fifth-places match involving Lyons and Monroe Area’s Seth Hogan was declared a DFF meaning the match did not take place because at least one wrestler had reached the maximum number of five bouts in one day.
The Bears, who sent five grapplers to the tournament, placed 28th in the field of 35 teams with 11.5 points. Gilmer captured the team title netting 190 points to Rockmart’s 184.5. Sonoraville (164.5) was third followed by Oconee County (99.5) and North Hall (95).
Lyons (23-6) won his opening match notching an 18-3 technical fall over J.T. Andrews of Mary Persons. Draven Peppers, the eventual runner-up, followed with an 11-2 major decision in the quarterfinals.
Lyons battled back pinning (51 seconds) Westminster’s Daniel Nunez and posting a 9-4 decision over Greater Atlanta Christian’s Isiah Pryor in the consolation bracket. Burke County’s Ivan Arroyo, the fourth-place finisher, clipped Lyons 5-4 in the consolation semifinals.
Braden Thorn (132; 17-7) recorded Pierce County’s only other win in te tournament. After falling 11-4 to Hart County’s Andrew Smith, the eventual sixth-pllace finsiher, in the first round, Thorn nipped Franklin County’s William Ballenger 8-7 in the consolation bracket. North Murray’s Hernan Hernandez, the co-fifth-place finisher, followed with a 13-5 major decision.
Zachary Davis (138; 17-8) lost a 12-1 major decision to Rockmart’s Bleu Winters, the third-place finisher, in his first match. Gilmer’s Carson Bentley, the co-fifth-place finisher, followed with a pin (2:42) in the consolation bracket.
Danny Thigpen (152; 16-11) lost twice by pinfall to Gilmer’s Miguel Jacinto (3:09), the eventual runner-up, and Appling County’s Robert Keyhea (1:51), the co-fifth-place finisher.
Zachary Fullard (170; 20-4) also suffered a pair of losses via pin falling to Rockmart’s Cameron Jenkins (2:34) and to Jacksons’ Elizardo Quintero (1:16).
