William Stephen Bowen Jr.

William Stephen Bowen Jr. of Savannah passed away Monday, August 1, 2022 after a brief illness.

 He was born February 14, 1938 in Blackshear to William Stephen “Buddy” Bowen Sr. and Alafae Jones Bowen.

He graduated from Blackshear High School and was a member of the 1956 state championship basketball team. While earning a mechanical engineering degree from Georgia Tech, he served as president of Delta Tau Delta fraternity. He then attended Stanford University where he received master’s degrees in mechanical engineering and business administration.

He began his business career as vice president of Southwire in Carrollton. His strong work ethic and entrepreneurial spirit led him to establish many businesses including Bowen Knife Company, Bowen Construction Company and Bee Rite Convenience stores. His last position was vice-president of Signs of the South, Inc. in Savannah.

He enjoyed several organizations including Young Presidents Organization, International Business Fellows and the Society of Colonial Wars. His love of all things aeronautical resulted in obtaining certifications as an instrument, multi-engine, and airline transport pilot. He was an avid reader, life-long learner and amateur genealogist. One of his greatest joys was having had the opportunity to travel the world for business and pleasure. He will be remembered for his constant and infectious smile and warm hugs.

He was predeceased by his parents; sister, Judy Bowen O’Steen and nephew Winston M. Bowen Jr.

Survivors include his loving wife of 50 years, Deborah Sieg Bowen; brother, Winston M. “Sonny” Bowen (Jane), Blackshear; brother-in-law, Beal O’Steen, Blackshear; nephews, Dr. Matthew O’Steen (Mary Katherine), Charleston and Brantley Bowen, Blackshear; nieces, Pamela O’Steen Baker (Greg), Blackshear and Mary Kathryn Bowen Starr (Brandon), Houston; great-nephews and nieces include Ben and Mary Bowen Baker; Crawford, Lillie Campbell and Coleman O’Steen; Stryker Bowen; and Jane Winston Starr.

Graveside funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 4, in Greenwich Section of Bonaventure Cemetery.  

Memorials may be made to the charity of your choice.
