Waunell Smith Poppell ‘Nell’ Roberson

Waunell Smith Poppell “Nell” Roberson, 84, passed away Wednesday, September 30, 2020, following an extended illness.

She was born in Pierce County to the late James William Smith and Phoebe Hendrix Smith. She had lived in Darien for several years before moving back to Waycross over 30 years ago. She was a great southern cook who was the former owner and operator of The Chicken Shack in Darien and Nell’s Kitchen in Crescent. She was also a member of Hosanna Church of Lord Jesus Christ in Waycross.

In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Eddie Dorsey Roberson; a son, Vernon D. “Pete” Poppell Jr.; a brother, Lester Owen Smith Sr.; her first husband, Vernon D. Poppell Sr.; and two great-grandsons, Joseph Harris Hendrix and Waylon Levi Hendrix.

Survivors include her daughter, Sherry Hendrix (Joe), Waycross; two sons, David Poppell (Connie) and Eddie Poppell, all of Darien; nine grandchildren, Heather Darby (Charley), Jeffrey Poppell (Kristy), Melissa “Missy” Hendrix Carter (Chris), Brad Hendrix (Lindsey), Eddie Poppell Jr. (Miranda), Jacob Poppell, Peri Poppell, Josh Poppell (Kayla) and Chelsea P. Hope (Jesse); 13 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; four siblings, David Smith (Clara), Robert Smith (Jeanette), John Eldon Smith (Ann) and Mildred Smith “Millie” Wilke and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be 1:30-2 p.m. Saturday, October 3, at Swamp Road Baptist Church Cemetery near Waycross.

Graveside funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, October 3, from Swamp Road Baptist Church Cemetery in Waycross.
