Vernie Young Jr., 64, of Blackshear, died Saturday, June 15, 2019, at his home under the care of Hospice Satilla.
A native and former resident of Jacksonville, FL, he had lived in Blackshear for the past seven years and was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church in Jacksonville serving as Sunday school superintendent and trustee. He was a 35 year employee with Anchor Glass Container. He enjoyed watching the Rev. Les Feldick with his “Through the Bible” TV series and westerns but mostly spending time with his grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Vernie Sr. and Leta Young, his sister, Doris Y. Manuel and two brothers, Vernon Young Jr. and Frank Young.
Survivors are his wife of 30 years, Sheila Young, Blackshear; two daughters, Sonya Barrett, Blackshear and Carie Young, Jacksonville, FL; two sons, Jamie (Jane) Barrett and Carlton “Keith” (Mandee) Barrett, both of Blackshear; step-son, Donald (Kay) Smith, Jacksonville, FL; three sisters, Linda Faye Young, Chatsworth, Barbara Ann Bell, St. George and Patricia Long, Ludowici; a brother, Edward (Shirley) Young Sr., Jacksonville, FL; 12 grandchildren, Cassie Vickers, Desiree Denison, C.J., Ansleigh, Andrew, Brianna, Trista, Mollie Barrett, Caitlyn Whalen, Nicholas and Michael McCarley and Mason Moody; seven great- grandchildren; several nieces and nephews and special friends, Barbara Matthews and her children.
Visitation will take place from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, June 18, at the funeral home.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 19, from the Rinehart and Sons Chapel with the Rev. Dennie Waters officiating.
Private interment will follow in Old Bethel Cemetery.
Honorary pallbearers will be his nephews.
