Merlin Dean Hoaglin

Merlin Dean Hoaglin, 90, of Blackshear, passed away early Sunday morning, December 27, 2020, at his residence, following an extended illness.

Born July 21, 1930 in Pleasant Hill, IL, he was a son of the late Clarence Michael Hoaglin and Georgia Mae Workman McClintock. He grew up and lived many years in Pleasant Hill before moving to Chatham, IL. He was a veteran, having served in the U.S. Navy and then worked in construction for a few years. He owned Hoaglin and Hoaglin Tire with his son for 26 years and retired as a manager and trainer for Sam’s Club in Springfield, IL.  

He had served on the Pleasant Hill City Council and was a member of the American Legion Post 1048 in Pleasant Hill.  He was a member of Rehobeth Baptist Church in Blackshear.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Edward Dean Hoaglin; his step-mother, Norma Hoaglin and two brothers, Maxion Hoaglin and Carroll L. Hoaglin.

Survivors include his wife of 70 years, Edna Garner Hoaglin, Blackshear; his daughter, Barbara Crawford (husband Dan), Blackshear; his daughter-in-law, Kathi Hoaglin-Gore (husband Mal), Elko; four grandchildren, Ryan Crawford (wife Jennifer), Chatham, IL, Jay Crawford (wife Marcia), Hamburg, NY, Rachel Streat (husband Brandon), Blackshear and Doug Hoaglin (wife Sarah), Blackshear; 12 great-grandchildren; 11 great-great-grandchildren; half-brother, Frank Hoaglin, Pittsfield, IL; his faithful companion, Little Bit and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, January 9, from the Rehobeth Baptist Church with the Rev. Phil Jordan officiating.
