Jonathan Grant, 81, known to all as “Papa Joe” of Patterson, received his calling from heaven Thursday, October 8, 2020.
He was born March 24, 1939 to the late Deacon Peter Thomas Grant and Ruth Ashley Grant. His mother died when he was a young boy. He was then raised by his step-mother, Rozelia Myers Grant.
He was taught the way of the Lord by his parents and church family at Pillar, Ground and Truth Holiness Church, Patterson.
Jonathan and Hester Booth, were childhood sweethearts. and September 15, 1962, they were joined in holy matrimony. They were happily married for 54 years. To their union, eight children were added. He moved his family to Philadelphia, PA in the year of 1970. While residing in PA, he was employed by Sandy Mac Meat Company located in New Jersey. After careful consideration, Jonathan and Hester decided to return home to Patterson in 1990 with their children. He was then employed by the City of Patterson as a laborer, until he retired in 2016.
Papa Joe was a person who cared deeply for all that he encountered, especially his family and in-laws.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Hester Lee Booth Grant; his parents, Deacon Peter Grant, Ruth Grant and Rozelia Grant; a brother, Andrew Jackson Grant; a granddaughter, Kallee Palmer and two great-grandchildren, Ahmad Pearson and Demarian Palmer.
His legacy will forever live on through those who will cherish his memories: four daughters, Brenda (Ephraim) Palmer, Blackshear, Yvette Frazier, Brunswick, Venturine (Charles) Daniels, Lake Stevens, WA, and Thelma Mason, Atlanta; 4 sons, Keith Frazier, Patterson, Kevin (Melody) Frazier, Fayetteville, NC, Malcolm (Danica) Deshields, Jacksonville, FL and Gary McWhorter, Philadelphia, PA; 13 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Julia Hicks, Punta Gorda, FL and Connie (the Rev. Herman) Lincoln, Patterson; three brothers and a sister-in-law, Peter Thomas Grant, Patterson, Archie Grant, Mechanicsville, VA, and Ulysses (Geraldine) Grant, Rochester, NY; an aunt, Naomi Whitehead, Greenville, PA; three sisters-in-law: Patricia Wilson, Estella Ashley and Rosa Ann Booth, all of Patterson; a brother-in-law, Andrew J. Booth, Patterson; 1 Godchild, Rayn Rhem, Waycross and a host of loving nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
The family is currently receiving friends at the home of Jonathan Grant, 3266 Lucas Street, Patterson, Georgia 31557.
Visitation will be held from 4-6 p.m. on Friday, October 16, at the funeral home, 210 Johnson Street, Blackshear.
Graveside funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, October 17, from the St. James Missionary Baptist Church (on the Ridge) Cemetery, 5610 Washington Lane, Patterson.
The cortege will assemble at 10:15 a.m. Saturday, October 17, at 3266 Lucas Street, Patterson.
