Betty Jean Knighton

Betty Jean Knighton, 84, of Albany, died Tuesday, April 16, 2019 at her son’s residence in Baker County. 

A native of Pierce County, she was the daughter of the late Mack Anderson and Martha Jane Strickland. After moving to the Albany area in 1967, she worked at Lykes Brothers and Harvey’s Supermarkets. After retiring from Harvey’s, she continued to work as a home health care nurse. Her greatest love was spending time with her children and her sister, Martha (Moosie).

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ned A. Knighton; her sons, Charlie Dennis Carter and Johnny Mack Carter, her “Daddy”, L.E. Thornton, and mother, Martha Jane Thornton and brothers, W.L. Anderson and J.R. Thornton.

Survivors include her sons, Curtis J. Carter, Quincy, FL and Vernon Wayne Carter, Baker County; her daughter, Annette Crawford (William), Terrell County; sister, Martha Lawson, Waycross; brothers, Alton Thornton (Zoie), Blackshear and Danny Thornton, Waycross; eight grandchildren, and 16 great-grandchildren.

Graveside funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 4, from the Crown Hill Cemetery. Pastor Malcolm C. Parker will officiate.

Following the service, the family will receive family and friends at Ladies of Nasah, 1822 Palmyra Road, Albany, GA.
