Tony Batten, U.S. Navy veteran and longtime American Legion member, will be the keynote speaker at this year’s Veterans Day ceremony in the city park.
Pierce County Post 181 of the American Legion Department of Georgia will hold the ceremony at 11 a.m Monday, November 11.
Former County Chairman and Veteran Troy Mattox will emcee the ceremony, and Pierce County High School’s Sound of Silver band will perform patriotic numbers. Veteran Irvin Rozier will give the benediction.
Batten served aboard the USS Montrose, a troop carrier, and went to Vietnam in ‘67. He was later stationed at Camp Tien Sha in Da Nang, Vietnam and in Norfolk, VA aboard the USS New.
Batten served four years in the Navy. He intends to share his journey and experiences during his address, but also to pay homage to all living veterans who’ve served.
“I’ll brag about all these men and women who serve our country,” Batten says.
Batten is also a former Mayor of Blackshear and owned Tony Batten Men’s Shop in downtown Blackshear.
Post 181 Commander Ken Piestrak will be available at the ceremony to address and answer any questions American Legion members may have regarding ongoing litigation between Post 181 and Pierce County Veterans, Inc.
