Times Staff Writer Jason Deal brought home the top award for feature writing at the Georgia Press Association’s Better Newspaper Contest presentation held last week at Jekyll Island.
Deal was recognized for a trio of feature stories published last year.
The stories include an April feature on local rodeo clown Colt Hartt, a September article on the retirement of long-time Bennett Hardware owner Dan Bennett Sr. and a December piece entitled “On the Clock” detailing how local emergency personnel spend the Christmas holidays protecting and serving us.
Deal has previously won state and national awards for his coverage of the Pierce County Schools, his occasional humor column and hard news writing.
He is a veteran journalist with over 24 years experience. He has been with The Blackshear Times for almost 18 years.
The Times has now won approximately 400 state and national awards for journalistic and advertising excellence over the past four decades.
