A female pedestrian was struck and killed by a tractor trailer Monday evening on U.S. Highway 84 at its intersection with Zero Bay Road in Offerman.
Sheriff Ramsey Bennett confirmed the fatality shortly after 9 p.m. The woman, believed to be a 36-year-old residing in the area, was pronounced dead at the scene by Coroner William Wilson.
The Georgia State Patrol is in charge of the accident investigation and few details were available at press time.
Law enforcement sources indicated the accident occurred in the westbound lanes in foggy conditions. The four-lane highway was reduced to two lanes during the accident recovery and investigation until early Tuesday when all lanes were re-opened to traffic.
The intersection is the entrance to the industrial area that includes the Rayonier Chip Mill, Southern Ionics and Mac 44 Trucking.
A complete report will be included in the March 3 edition of The Times.
