Malone qualifies

Kirby Malone, local developer, seeks BOE seat.

Local realtor Kirby Malone has announced he will run for the district one seat on the Pierce County Board of Education.

Malone qualified as a candidate for the post Monday.

Malone, 48, says his platform will center around “helping our students”.

“I want only the best for Pierce County and want to make sure we do everything we can to help the students in our community succeed,” said Malone.

Malone and his wife, Shannon, have three children, Carter, Dalton and Maddie. He is the owner of Cobblestone Builders and co-owner of Remax Cobblestone Realty. He is a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church, an alumnus of Leadership Waycross, a past president of the Board of Realtors and a member of the Pierce County Booster Club. He served on the school councils at Midway Elementary and Pierce County Middle School. He has a bachelor’s degree from Valdosta State University and served for nine years in the National Guard.

Malone is the only announced candidate so far. Former district one school board member Melvin Johnson had been mentioned as a possible candidate, but Johnson said he does not plan to run for the post.

The seat is currently held by Jack Saussy. Saussy announced last week he will not seek re-election to the district one seat.

Saussy has served two terms in the post having been first elected in 2012. He will step down from the seat once his term ends December 31.

District one includes the Hacklebarney/Cason areas.

The position is non-partisan.
