Judge Dowling to retire

Pierce County will soon have a new Magistrate Judge.

Current Magistrate Judge Glenda Dowling has announced her intention to retire effective July 1.

Dowling has served as chief magistrate for 33 years. She was first elected to fill an unexpired term in 1989 and has been re-elected seven times, including most recently in 2020.

Under Georgia law, the Superior Court Judges of the Waycross Judicial Circuit will appoint someone to fill the remainder of Dowling’s term. The judges of the circuit include Chief Judge Dwayne H. Gillis, Judge Jeffrey Kight, Judge J. Kelly Brooks and Judge Andrew C. Spivey.

The term will end at midnight December 31, 2024.

Nominations are currently being accepted. The deadline for nominations is 5 p.m. Friday, May 27.
