A Jacksonville, FL couple was killed and a Pierce County man arrested following a hit and run accident Saturday night.
Efforts to obtain a complete accident report from the Georgia State Patrol were unsuccessful before The Times’ deadline this week.
According to law enforcement sources, the accident occurred on Georgia Highway 121 at its intersection with the Scuffletown Road, just south of the Big Satilla Creek bridge at the Pierce-Appling County line Saturday night.
The Jacksonville couple, were identified as Dan Young and his wife, Jamie Young. Mr. Young was pronounced dead at the scene by Pierce County Coroner William Wilson. Mrs. Young died in the emergency room at Memorial Satilla Health in Waycross.
The Youngs were riding a motorcycle on Georgia Highway 121 when a vehicle driven by Lionel Torres Mendozia was attempting to turn onto the Scuffletown Highway and turned into the Youngs’ path striking their bike.
Mendozia, 37, of Bristol, reportedly fled the scene but was arrested by deputies with the Pierce County Sheriff’s office late Saturday night.
Mendozia has been charged with two counts of homicide by vehicle in the first degree, leaving the scene of an accident, driving under the influence, driving without a valid license, failure to yield, improper lane change and a seatbelt violation.
Mendozia is being held in the Pierce County Jail.
The accident is still under investigation.
