The county will apply for a $500,000 matching grant for construction and expansion of baseball fields at the Pierce County Recreation Complex on Ware and Yeomans Streets in Blackshear.
Commissioners voted unanimously at their regular meeting last Tuesday night to apply for the monies.
The grant would develop and build fields on a 22 acre tract across Yeomans Street from the existing recreation complex on Ware Street.
The Yeomans Street parcel was purchased by the county in 2000, but has never been developed.
The county will apply for a Department of Natural Resources Land and Water Conservation Grant for the project.
Pierce County will have to match the grant amount for a total of $1 million in improvements at the park.
The county’s match will come from the monies allocated for recreation in the 2014 special purpose local option sales tax (SPLOST).
The proposed expansion is part of a years’ long effort to improve the county’s recreation facilities.
In 2017, the county was given title by the city of Blackshear to the 26 acres occupied by the current park on Ware Street.
Commissioners also approved the purchase of 11.12 acres of land adjacent to the current park for $75,000 in 2018. That land is currently undeveloped.
