BOE finalizes contract for new school supt.
New school superintendent Dara Bennett will be paid $124,000 per year for the job.
The Board of Education formally approved the contract during a called meeting last Wednesday night. The meeting was held digitally via Youtube owing to the threat posed by COVID-19 (coronavirus).
The contract is for three years and will begin June 5 and continue through June 4, 2023.
The board will also provide Bennett a $2,400 vehicle allowance.
Bennett’s contract is similar to those of previous superintendents, but the base salary is higher than the one current superintendent Dr. Kevin Smith started with. Dr. Smith’s opening salary was $115,000 per year.
When asked for an explanation of the difference, board chairperson Linda Zechmann declined comment.
“Those items were discussed in (closed) session,” she said. “I can’t discuss it.”
Bennett, currently the principal at the high school, was hired as the new school superintendent at the board’s regular work session Thursday, April 2.
She will take over for Smith whose tenure will end June 5. Smith has served as superintendent of schools since 2017.
