Onlookers around Lairsey's Crossing cringed at the sight of a school bus and semi-truck tangled together at the notorious intersection.
Frantic whispers of "Is everyone OK?" were met with assurance none of those in the vehicles were dead.
Four were injured in the accident as the semi traveling east on Highway 84 struck the driver's side of the bus around 3:34 p.m. Wednesday. A 14-year-old middle-school student, the bus driver and a bus monitor were all transported to Satilla Regional Medical center with no life-threatening injuries, according to authorities.
Driving the school bus was Ada Jones, 61, of Mershon, accompanied by bus monitor Bernice Dixon, 52.
The semi-truck driver, Richard Crawford, 64, of Reidsville, reportedly sustained minor injuries, but refused transport.
The school bus was crossing Highway 84 to Hacklebarney Road when the semi-truck, headed east toward Blackshear on Highway 84, ran the red light, according to a Georgia State Patrol report. Crawford was cited for failure to obey a traffic control device.
Momentum from the crash took both vehicles into the parking lot of the convenience store at the corner of Lairsey's Crossing. The bus came to stop on its passenger side, with the semi turned over on its driver side as well, but partially on top of the bus. The vehicles came within 20 feet of striking the store's gasoline pumps.
Crawford was driving a truck for a company out of Collins. The vehicles load of soybean meal was dumped onto the road.
The Blackshear Police Department, Pierce County Sheriff's Office, fire and EMA crews were on the scene for several hours securing and clearing the scene, which closed down westbound lanes of traffic.
